How to Use Cord Loops to Attach Gear

Mountaineering poles are a common and useful piece of gear, but there are times when you don’t need them—such as when crossing tricky terrain requiring both hands and feet or when you want to free your hands to eat on-the-go. Simply stuffing them inside your pack isn’t ideal. This is where Cord kit come in handy for external carry: fast, lightweight, and space-saving.

Generally, backpacks with Daisy Chain gear loops or top/bottom webbing loops can be paired with cord loops. Here’s a demonstration using the Garnet for attaching trekking poles externally.

Step 1: Attach the Lower Pole

  • Locate a webbing loop at the bottom of the pack (or a suitable Daisy Chain loop).

  • Thread a standard cord loop through the webbing and tie a simple overhand knot to secure it.

Step 2: Secure the Pole Tip

  • Tie a single knot around the pole tip to fix the lower half of the trekking pole.

  • Optional: Use a pole tip protector to prevent injury to yourself or others.

Step 3: Prepare the Upper Attachment

  • Find a suitable top webbing loop.

  • Thread an elastic cord loop with a buckle through the loop and tie an overhand knot. (The buckle makes adjustments easier.)

Step 4: Wrap and Fix the Pole

  • Wrap the cord around the pole and pass the buckle through the cord loop for fixation.

Step 5: Tighten and Secure

  • Press the buckle to tighten the cord loop, securing the trekking pole to the pack.

  • When you need the pole, simply release the buckle for easy removal.
