Backpacking – Introduction to Overnight Hiking

Compared to day hikes or driving to a campsite, an overnight backpacking trip is usually more challenging, but it allows you to get closer to the heart of the mountains and experience nature in a unique way. For those without experience, facing an overnight hike can be daunting—they may not know where to start, and unpreparedness can increase potential risks. Here are three simple steps for anyone wanting to try an overnight trip. It’s neither too difficult nor something to fear.

Step 1: Find an experienced partner

“If I see further, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants.” Learning overnight hiking alone is not easy, but understanding through someone else’s real experience is much faster. Before organizing your own overnight trip, the first step is to go with an experienced friend. By observing how they plan the route, prepare gear, and handle situations during the trip, you’ll naturally gain understanding.

What if you don’t know anyone like that? There are many online hiking communities where people often look for teammates. Take the first step—you’ll surely find a group to join.

Step 2: Choose an overnight route

Next, pick a route that you like. Several factors should be considered, and if you’re unsure, discuss them with the experienced partner from Step 1.

  • Planned duration – Consider your available time; even a two-day weekend can accommodate a suitable trip.

  • Physical condition – Understanding your own stamina helps you plan the itinerary correctly.

  • Hiking distance and trail conditions – Check the route’s mileage, elevation, and other conditions.

  • Transport and accommodation – Plan for transfers (e.g., circular routes or point-to-point) and camping spots.

  • Mountain weather conditions – Review records and forecasts for rain, snow, or other potential hazards.

Step 3: Confirm your gear

The mountains are not like the city—you can’t just buy anything you forget. Before heading out, make sure to check and pack all your gear. This is why it’s called backpacking—your carried gear is closely tied to your trip. Below is a list of basic equipment for an overnight hike for reference.

Personal gear

  • Hiking clothing – including backpack, warm layers, waterproof jacket and pants, hat, socks, and footwear.

  • Sleep gear – sleeping bag, bivy sack, and sleeping pad.

  • Map, compass, and route apps.

  • Headlamp.

  • Food and water.

  • First aid kit.

  • Utensils.

Team gear

  • Tent.

  • Stove and cookware.

  • Shared water and food supplies.
