Trail Running Packs / Hydration Packs Q&A Collection

Trail Running Packs / Hydration Packs vs. Regular Backpacks

What’s the Difference? When Do You Need Them?

In this article, we’ll go through some of the most common questions to help you understand the key differences at a glance.

What is a Trail Running Pack / Hydration Pack?

As the name suggests, a hydration pack is designed to hold a water bladder, while a trail running pack is made for trail running. These packs are also known as running vests or vest packs. They are designed for fast movement, running comfort, and on-the-go hydration. Compared to traditional backpacks, their biggest difference is the close fit — worn almost like clothing. Visually, they resemble a vest more than a backpack.

Why are they designed like a vest? How is it different from carrying a traditional pack?

The vest-style carrying system makes wearing the pack feel more like putting on clothing than strapping on a bag. While it can be a little less convenient to take on and off, the tradeoff is a snugger fit and much greater stability. When running, the pack stays aligned with your body’s center of gravity, minimizing bounce and sway. Think of it like the difference between a sports car and a small pickup truck: one is built for speed, the other for carrying heavy loads.

If it’s harder to take off, doesn’t that make drinking water inconvenient?

Quite the opposite. Trail running packs are often called hydration packs for a reason. They are designed so you can drink without stopping — with bladder compartments and hydration tube routing built in. If you prefer bottles over a water bladder, the front chest pockets are designed to hold soft flasks for quick sips on the go.

Tip: Soft flasks are more comfortable in the front chest pockets. PET bottles can fit too, but they may feel bulkier.

How is the storage different from a regular backpack?

Unlike traditional backpacks designed for camping or long rests, trail running packs are optimized for constant movement. Quick access is the priority. You’ll usually find multiple pockets on the front, sides, and back that allow you to grab items without slowing down. Many also include attachment points for gear like trekking poles to adapt to different terrains.

How do I choose the right pack size (capacity)?

Similar to choosing a hiking backpack, the “right” size depends on your trip. Consider your gear and how long you’ll be out. Shorter runs usually call for smaller capacity packs, while longer or more gear-intensive outings require larger packs.

We’ll also be releasing a range of different sizes and capacities soon, so you can find the perfect fit for your needs. Stay tuned!
